The goal is to choose a panel size that stays securely in place, while still allowing enough clearance for installation and future removal.
Method 1: If your current lens fits well, using those same dimensions is a workable plan.
Method 2: Getting your own measurement
- Measure the Visible Light Opening
- Measure the Maximum Inside Fixture Dimensions
- The difference between these two is the “ledge” the panel rests on
- Choose the largest size between those two that fits comfortably
Summary
A typical fit provides about 3/8″ to 1/2″ of support around the perimeter, although some fixtures allow as little as 1/4″.
If the inside of the fixture is much larger than the visible opening, a larger panel may be needed to reduce excess movement.
We see far more issues with panels ordered too large than too small. If the panel has a little movement but cannot fall out, you’re in good shape. If it’s too large, installation becomes difficult or impossible.
